Bol Movie Review

Shoaib Mansoor is one of the brightest names to come out of Pakistan. A few years ago, his film KHUDA KAY LIYE, which tackled the theme of terrorism, won wide acclaim and praise. The supremely talented storyteller is back with another bold and hard-hitting effort called BOL, which unmasks the dual standards prevalent in the society. In fact, we make tall claims about the rights of women and how they are equal to men, but if one looks around, especially in the under-developed countries, the disparity and inequality is for all to see.

Shoaib is indeed a courageous storyteller and this film must have sparked off a debate when it released in Pakistan several weeks ago. Like KHUDA KAY LIYE, BOL addresses the religious extremism in the neighboring country. It's about a daughter who stands up against her father, but most importantly, she dares to defy the age-old societal norms that treat women as lesser beings. The fact that a Pakistani film-maker has had the courage to tackle this theme makes it all the more commendable and praiseworthy.

When Jennifer Aniston axed her signature layers into a chic bob, America swooned (again). Her hair can do no wrong, securing the most requested style of 2011 (hitmaker Rihanna has the country’s second favorite bob). Aniston’s stylist, Chris McMillan, created the slightly angled look by trimming at the nape of the neck and following the jawline. The secret to Rihanna’s blazing crop? A dry haircut. “I anticipate the way she’ll actually wear it,” says RiRi’s stylist, Ursula Stephen. The look hit especially high notes in our live music capital. “It’s the ultimate Austin cut,” explains Michael Portman, co-owner of Birds Barbershop. “The city is laid-back—people don’t want a fussy style.”

Bodyguard

For most of us, the festive season is also about entertaining ourselves with a Bollywood biggie. Following two blockbuster Eid releases in the last two years, WANTED [2009] and DABANGG [2010], Salman Khan, the darling of the masses, unleashes yet another entertainer this Eid [this time, it coincides with Ganesh Chaturthi] -- BODYGUARD. The buzz around a Salman movie only got bigger this year, but the pertinent question is, will Salman deliver yet another festive hit with BODYGUARD? After having set such high standards for himself, will Salman surpass his previous achievements? Well, that should be easy to pull off taking into account [a] Salman's current form at the box-office and [b] The film has the merits to stand on its feet.

A section of the industry feels that Salman is limiting himself to hardcore masala films that defy logic. That he's slowly getting typecast in similar genre movies. Perhaps, you may assume that BODYGUARD is no exception. You may also assume that BODYGUARD is an extension of what we've witnessed in DABANGG and READY. But it is not so. Let me say, BODYGUARD is atypical Salman entertainer, yet there are moments [in its second hour specifically] that make it stand apart from all Salman starrers we have witnessed in the recent past, which includes WANTED, DABANGG and READY.

Director Siddique, who has directed the same script for the third time, ensures that a simple story is narrated with simplicity and unfussiness. The twist in the tale comes at the right time, the songs are smartly integrated in the plotline and of course, there are ample comic moments, courtesy Rajat Rawail. The best thing about the film is that Siddique has made a very conscious effort to project Salman as a sensitive human being and not as a demigod, which is why the character becomes all the more relatable and endearing.

On the whole, BODYGUARD works for varied reasons -- it has a simple, but captivating story with a dramatic twist in the tale, the chemistry between the lead actors is perfect and the music is well juxtaposed in the narrative. But its biggest USP is, without doubt, Salman Khan. He carries the film on his broad and brawny shoulders and that alone is the imperative reason for watching this film. BODYGUARD should emerge his third festive hit and fourth super-success at the ticket window. Expect a hurricane called BODYGUARD to strike at the box-office.

Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong Booted Off Flight Because of Saggy Pants

We all know to fasten our seatbelts before takeoff, but you now may want to wear a belt before boarding your flight, too.

Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong was kicked off a Southwest Airlines plane for refusing to pull up his pants after an attendant asked him to.

Here's what happened...

According to a news reporter for San Francisco's ABC7 who was on board, the flight attendant asked Armstrong to hike up his saggy pants right before takeoff, in which he responded by asking if there were "better things to do than worry about that?"

Armstrong was then notified that he would be ejected off the plane if he didn't comply, and then he and his friend were booted.

Armstrong tweeted, "Just got kicked off a southwest flight because my pants sagged too low! What the f--k? No joke!"

Southwest tweeted him back with, "Very sorry for your experience tonight, someone from our Customer Relations Team will reach out to you to get more details."

An airline spokesperson released a statement saying the Armstrong was allowed onto the next flight to Burbank and had told a customer relations agent who contacted him he had no further complaints.

The most memorable part of the shoot was when Afridi had to do his signature move of standing victoriously with both his arms up in the air. As soon as he did that, the fans screamed and cheered with joy and happiness. The nonstop cheering proved the love and admiration we all have for Afridi. The fans present in the stands gave a whole different energy to the atmosphere and made the entire shoot an unforgettable experience.

Lady Gaga’s alter ego, Jo Calderone, performs at 2011 MTV Video Music Awards

If you thought Lady Gaga couldn’t outdo herself after wearing a dress made out of meat to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, you are mistaken. At tonight’s 2011 awards, Gaga baffled crowds by appearing as alter ego Jo Calderone.

Calderone is hardly a lady—“he” describes himself as a guy from New Jersey whose family hails from Palermo, Italy. In stark contrast to Gaga’s racy, feminine frocks, Calderone has short, black, dare I say greasy hair, wears a white jersey tee under a dark, ill-fitting suit, speaks with a deep voice, and smokes incessantly.

In addition to opening the show by performing Gaga’s latest single, “You and I”, Calderone appeared topresent Britney Spears with an award that paid homage to her impressive career, all the while making rather unladylike comments.

“Britney taught me how to be fearless…she taught us all how to be fearless. She is a pop music legend, and the industry would not be the same without her,” Calderone began benignly, before adding, “I used to hang posters of her on my wall and touch myself while I was lying in bed.”

Deepika Padukone: 'People are welcome to speculate'

Mumbai, Aug. 20 -- She hits headlines quite often with respect to her 'rumoured' boyfriend Sidhartha Mallya. But actor Deepika Padukone doesn't feel the need to confirm or deny anything that's anywhere close to her personal life, friends and family. The Aarakshan actor, says, firmly, that "people don't need to know if it's (true) or not or what we do and where we go."

"There's a certain part of life I would like to keep to myself. And I don't think I am answerable to anyone, whether I say yes or no to a guy. People are most welcome to speculate. It's fun to read what people have to say or write about it. But you won't hear anything from me on the topic," says the model who debuted as an actor with Om Shanti Om girl (2007) with Shah Rukh Khan.

Currently, Deepika would rather talk about her upcoming venture, Cocktail, produced by Saif Ali Khan, who is also her co-actor in the movie. "It's great to work with Saif because he is one of the finest actors we have in Bollywood. And I am glad that people liked our pairing so much in Love Aaj Kal. Thanks to that, we've been paired a couple of times more," says the actor, who played Saif's love interest in Prakash Jha's Aarakshan.

After a long schedule in London, Deepika has wrapped up a reasonable chunk of Homi Adajania's second movie. "It's almost complete. We have shot around 85-90 per cent of the film with a small portion left to be shot now. It will take only about 10-15 days to complete," informs Deepika, who also has the Rajinikanth-starrer Rana in her kitty.

Talking of Saif, what's her reaction to rumours about problems between her and the former's girlfriend Kareena Kapoor? "I don't think there's anything to react to. I share a professional equation with Saif. That's about it. And I guess since Kareena is a part of his life, it's (such talks) bound to come up. But that's understandable," she smiles.

Interestingly though, Deepika says that Cocktail has left her tired: "It has been emotionally draining for me. It's one film that I am tired after working upon. It's an intense love story. But I am happy that it puts me and Saif back together in one more love story after Love Aaj Kal."
